The Practice

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

More than exercise, Ashtanga is an ancient eight-limbed path that unites breath, movement and awareness — bringing the body, the mind and the soul into balance.

An eight-limbed path to wholeness

The word Ashtanga means “eight limbs” (ashta = eight, anga = limb), drawn from the teachings of the sage Patanjali. Together these eight limbs form a complete guide to living well — in body, mind and spirit.

The physical postures most people know as “yoga” are only one of these limbs. Practised together with breath and mindful attention, they become a moving meditation: a way to steady the body, quiet the mind, and reconnect with a deeper sense of calm.

This is the tradition Kamini Sharma has studied and taught for 17 years — adapting its timeless principles gently to each student’s body and life.

The Eight Limbs

The foundations of the practice

Each limb supports the next — guiding us from how we live in the world, to how we move, breathe, and find stillness within.

1

Yama

Ethical principles for how we treat the world around us — non-violence, truthfulness and balance.

2

Niyama

Personal disciplines — cleanliness, contentment, self-study and devotion that nurture inner wellbeing.

3

Asana

The physical postures that build strength, flexibility and steadiness in the body.

4

Pranayama

Conscious breathing that calms the nervous system and increases energy and focus.

5

Pratyahara

Turning the senses inward — releasing distraction and the noise of the outside world.

6

Dharana

Concentration — the gentle art of holding the mind on a single point.

7

Dhyana

Meditation — a steady, effortless flow of awareness and presence.

8

Samadhi

A deep sense of peace and connection — the quiet joy that the whole path leads toward.

Mind & Soul

How Ashtanga yoga nourishes the inner self

When breath and movement come together, the mind naturally slows down. Over time, the practice becomes a refuge — a place to return to balance.

A Quieter Mind

Mindful breathing and focused movement calm a busy mind, easing worry and helping you feel more present in everyday life.

Emotional Balance

The practice builds patience, self-awareness and contentment — a steadiness that helps you meet life’s ups and downs with grace.

Peace of Mind

Through stillness and breath, students often describe a deep sense of calm and clarity that stays with them long after class.
